Random becomes SETUP

Dec 17 2009

We have changed the name of our pilot to SETUP after we realised it sounded too much like the London based lab rAndom International.

Inspired by expert meeting on The Future of the Lab

Nov 30 2009

On behalf of Medialab Utrecht, Levien Nordeman attended 'The Future of the Lab', an international 3-day expert meeting organised by Baltan Laboratories in Eindhoven. During the expert meeting 35 national and international guests debated strategies, research and the future of the media lab. The expert meeting was inspiring and resulted in a lot of new insights on the structure, aims and context of a new medialab in Utrecht. More information: www.baltanlaboratories.org.

Things are taking shape

Nov 26 2009

Over the past few months our three foundations have been meeting every week. We talked about all the various people we met, the ideas we had, and slowly but surely we developed a larger plan. The first glimpses of this bigger plan can now be found on this site, mostly to give context to our current project: Random.

Random is a temporary medialab, a meeting and project space, a place to learn in and learn from. A pilot project, in which we start doing what we intended to do, and become stronger while doing it.

Medialab Utrecht enjoys play

Sep 10 2009

On the symbolic date of 09-09-09 Jeroen van Mastrigt launched his PLAY initiative. Play wants to "combine the essence of a museum with character of games and playful culture". We went to see the presentation and were impressed.

Play Utrecht

Oh what a night!

Jul 16 2009

So, the second Utrecht New Media Evening. Sixty people came and, more importantly, voiced an opinion. We discussed a wide variety of things. One of the first things we talked about was the dichotomy between the classic arts and the applied arts. The consensus was that the 'something' could and should cater to both types. We also talked more concretely about what we want. Do we want a big building that everybody could work in, or would we favour a central meeting space? Perhaps a purely virtual entity? Start small?

Utrecht Nieuwe Media Avond 2

There's a lot to think about. A lot to talk about too, although, to be sure, that's not all we're doing. For now check out the awesome video report, thanks to Rui Guerra who, incidentally, is also part of a yet another new medialab :-)

And of course everyone's invited to the BBQ in the center of the Wilhelminapark, august 5th at 18 o' clock. Bring beer and BBQ stuff, and if there's not enough we'll buy some at the Albert Heijn nearby.

15th Juli - UNMA #2: What’s Cooking?

Jun 16 2009

The Impakt, z25.org and NetNiet.org foundations present the second edition of the “Utrecht Nieuwe Media Avond” (Utrecht New Media Evening), its expert-meeting and networking event. After a broad first look at e-Culture in Utrecht it is now time to delve a bit deeper. Where will all the nice new digital and interactive projects be produced? Apart from the existing labs and initiatives there are a lot of plans and new ideas boiling under the surface. A new Utrecht medialab? A digital epicentre ? Or a few nurseries bristling with soldering irons and computers? During the evening ten young initiatives from Utrecht and other Dutch cities will present their visions after which the various models will be debated publicly.
